Public Health Programs 1. Mosquito nets Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease kills over 1 million children worldwide every year. LCEC seeks to provide Bed nets AS one of the most effective ways of protecting children and adults from malaria. We also educated communities on other ways to prevent and control the reproduction of mosquitoes. 2. First aid kits for schools Out of the 102 secondary and 234 primary schools in Laikipia county, less than 20 have emergency first aid kits. In case of accidents in schools, student and pupils are usually referred to local dispensaries, which are too far away or unavailable in the area. To contribute to the safety of students while at school, LCEC aims to equip the schools with these basic tools and train both staff and students on their usage. 3. Nutrition BALANCED nutrient feeds help restore health in malnourished children. A severely malnourished child receiving therapeutic feeding may gain as much as 2 pounds in a single week. LCEC seeks to provide ready-to-use fortified blended foods (e.g. corn soya blend, Unimix and micro-nutrient powders and supplements) rich in nutrients like zinc, protein, and vitamin E to such children. 4. Mobile clinics Health-care centers in LAIKIPIA COUNTY are chronically understaffed. The health-care centers are inadequate to serve the large populations. LCEC envisages to bring volunteer doctors who will work in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local dispensaries to attend to the health needs of the people. 5. Sanitation There lacks an effective sanitation and hygiene system in many schools, homesteads and public places within Laikipia County. LCEC therefore raises hygiene awareness to the local communities (especially nomads) and collaborates with the relevant health stakeholders in establishing the necessary measures to improve sanitation.
