Education Programs 1. Laikipia children hope and care Center There is a constant rise in the number of orphaned, abused, abandoned, internally displaced and other vulnerable children in Laikipia West District resulting from prevalence of HIV and AIDS, tribal conflicts, poverty, illiteracy, retrogressive cultural practices, drug and alcohol abuse among other factors. Nevertheless, there is inadequate attention to address the problems facing such groups of children in the county. These children are lonely and suffer malnourishment , poor health, abandonment, illiteracy and rejection. You can help build a hope and care center where these vulnerable children receive love, warmth, acceptance, food, health-care, education and more. 2. Sponsorship program LCEC through the support of well wishers currently supports 5 students to secondary school. There is an African saying “educate a girl and educate a whole village”. More than half of girls in Laikipia do not finish primary school. Many are forced to drop out of school to work in order to help their families or given into early marriage. Some simply lack school fees, uniform and sanitary towels. Inasmuch LCEC recognizes this special need girls, we recognize the need for balanced support to both boys and girls. 3. Bicycle project for schools In many countries, access to high school education is a major challenge. Where accessible, many pupils and students walk for miles to reach school. Exhausted and hungry upon arrival to school, many do not concentrate on their studies and hence they perform poorly. Availability of bicycles provide safe and fast transportation enabling young learners get education and open doors to a whole new future. 4. Sanitary towels for adolescent girls
More than 70% of adolescent girls in Laikipia county miss 5 days
of school every month during their menstrual cycle. This means missing 2
months of school every year. Consequently, the girls’ performance in school as compared to their male counterparts is negatively affected. 5. Cow project
LCEC in partnership with Hill Crest academy USA supports a cow project at Sipili school for the deaf. The cows provide milk to the pupils. 6. Peer education LCEC underscores the place for self awareness and development especially amongst the youth. In order to build children’s and students desirable character, attitude and esteem, LCEC runs peer education projects in both primary and secondary schools within Laikipia County.
