Environmental Conservation Programs 1. Renewable energy Many households do not have access to the main grid electricity and hence turn to using kerosene lamps for lighting their houses. Children use this light to study in the evening and this presents a lot of health complications. Kerosene is also very expensive and many rural families cannot afford. It also pollutes the environment. An average household uses $20 per month in household lighting. The alternative is to use rechargeable lamps, which provide clean lighting, are environmentally friendly and allow savings for families. 2. Tree planting project for schools Trees are important, valuable and necessary resources to our very existence.
Our existing forests and the trees we plant work in tandem to make a better
world, preventing global warming and climate change which is the most serious
threat to human existence on planet earth today. LCEC therefore educates
communities on environmental awareness as well as engaging them in
reforestation, afforestation and protection of plants. 3. Garbage management Refuse generated by households as well as business enterprises pose a major threat to the health of people and the rest of the creation. LCEC employs the principle of 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) to free communities from the menace of garbage. 4. Water wells for schools
Clean and safe drinking water is an essential commodity but one that is inaccessible by many Laikipia communities. LCEC seeks to engage communities in the construction of traditional water wells. This is an affordable way of obtaining water in rural communities. A water well of about 60 feet can provide clean and safe water for children in schools thereby preventing water-borne diseases like dysentery and typhoid prevalent in Kenya. Traditional water wells are easy to maintain and can provide enough water for over 150 people for more than a year.
